Key Health Insurance Terms

Understanding health insurance starts with knowing the key terms. The premium is your monthly payment to maintain coverage. The deductible is what you pay out-of-pocket before your insurance starts covering costs. Copays are fixed amounts for doctor visits or prescriptions. Coinsurance is your share of costs after meeting your deductible, typically 20-30%. The out-of-pocket maximum is the most you'll pay in a year before insurance covers 100%.

Types of Health Insurance Plans

The most common types are HMOs (Health Maintenance Organizations), PPOs (Preferred Provider Organizations), EPOs (Exclusive Provider Organizations), and HDHPs (High-Deductible Health Plans). HMOs require a primary care doctor and referrals for specialists but have lower premiums. PPOs offer more flexibility at a higher cost. HDHPs have lower premiums but higher deductibles — they're often paired with Health Savings Accounts (HSAs).

How to Choose a Health Plan

When choosing a plan, consider your expected healthcare usage. If you rarely visit the doctor, an HDHP with an HSA could save you money. If you have chronic conditions or expect major medical expenses, a lower-deductible plan may be better despite higher premiums. Don't just compare premiums — add up the total expected cost: premiums + deductible + estimated copays/coinsurance.

ACA Marketplace and Subsidies

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) created the Health Insurance Marketplace where you can shop for plans. If your household income is 100-400%+ of the Federal Poverty Level, you likely qualify for premium tax credits (subsidies) that lower your monthly costs. Open enrollment runs from November 1 to January 15, but you can enroll outside this window if you experience a qualifying life event like marriage, birth, or job loss.

Preventive Care and Essential Benefits

Under the ACA, all Marketplace plans must cover 10 essential health benefits — including hospitalization, prescription drugs, maternity care, and mental health services. Preventive services like vaccines, screenings, and annual checkups must be covered at no cost to you (no copay or deductible required). Take advantage of these free services to catch health issues early.
