Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I need disability insurance?

About 1 in 4 workers will experience a disability lasting 90+ days before retirement age. Disability insurance replaces a portion of your income (typically 40-60%) if you can't work due to illness or injury. Your biggest asset is your earning potential — protecting it is as important as protecting your home or car.

What elimination period should I choose?

The elimination period is how long you wait before benefits begin, similar to a deductible. A 90-day elimination is most common and offers a good balance of premium cost vs. protection. Choose 30 or 60 days if you have limited emergency savings. Choose 180 days if you have a healthy emergency fund (6+ months) and want lower premiums.

Is employer-provided disability insurance enough?

Employer group disability usually only covers 50-60% of base salary (not bonuses), often capped, and benefits may be taxable if the employer pays premiums. Group policies may also have stricter definitions of disability. Consider supplementing with an individual policy to fill the gap, especially if you have a high income or specialized occupation.
